Breathable nail polish: Muslim women embrace O2M manicures

According to a Feb. 26 Daily Mail report, Muslim fashionistas are breathing a sigh a relief over breathable nail polish.  Breathable nail polish is described as nail polish that “allows water vapors to pass through to the nail
Devout Muslim women are unable to wear regular nail polish because of the multiple washings that go with their daily prayers.  Poland-based Inglot Cosmetics has a the solution with its release of a new line of nail polish called O2M, which gives Muslim women the comfort of daily washings and maintaining fabulous manicures.  O2M is available in the United States at Macy’s, according to the Daily Mail.

According to ABC News, Muslim fashionistas like Zaida Salah cannot get enough of the new polish.  “It's huge,” said Saleh.  “I am excited. I feel more feminine — and I just love it.”  ABC News reports that 35-year-old Saleh has not polished her nails in a long time and could not resist immediately rushing out to scoop the new polish in several colors, including bright pink, burgundy and mauve.
The Quran does not directly address the nail polish issue, but some Islamic scholars have reportedly  said that water must touch the surface of the nail for the pre-prayer washing ritual to be done right.  In the past some Muslim women put nail polish on after finishing the last prayer of the day before going out, and had to take it off again before dawn prayers.

“It was a big headache for me to put it on only for five days, so I didn't wear it for a long time,” said Saleh.  “This was a huge breakthrough for me. We are supposed to cover up, but nowhere does it say ‘don't be fashionable.’”
